5 Reasons Why ‘Click Here’ As Anchor Text isn’t recommended (But There Are Exceptions)

Anchor text plays a defining role in how clickable a hyperlink in your content is. Even though the page you are linking to maybe a credible, authoritative and informative resource, all that won’t matter for the reader if the anchor text is lackluster or repulsive.

Many website owners and copywriters fail at this crucial step of content creation by treating anchor text as an afterthought. There’s no better example of this failure than the frequent use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text. While the phrase sounds harmless and to some extent practical, it’s usually not recommended for anchor text though there are exceptions.

We take a look at why you should use ‘Click Here’ sparingly.

1. Google Doesn’t Like It

One of the reasons for the popularity, proliferation, and power of the Internet is the absence of a central authority. Still, while there’s nobody or person sitting somewhere dictating what can and cannot be done on the worldwide web, Google is by far the single most influential organization on the Internet.

Accounting for the largest proportion of web traffic, Google’s opinions on how the world wide web should work is pivotal. You are under no obligation to adhere to Google’s recommendations or rules but failure to do so would mean missing out on the enormous web traffic that originates from Google Search.

When it comes to the use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text, Google is unequivocal in discouraging it (see Google’s SEO Starter Guide).

2. Confuses Search Engines

Google discourages the use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text. That’s partly because the phrase doesn’t help search engine bots understand and categorize the content. When assessing content for relevance and authority, search engines compare the text on the target page with the phrases different websites use as anchor text to link to the page. If you use ‘Click Here’ for most or all links on your web page or website, you’re denying search engines the vital information they need to establish the context of the target page.

It’s bad enough if you are using ‘Click Here’ for external links but much worse when linking to internal pages. In theory, you are the foremost authority on the content of your page. So if you are not clear about what your internal pages are about, you cannot expect anyone else to do it for you. Your web page’s reputation could suffer for it in the eyes of search engines.

3. It May Be Ambiguous

‘Click Here’ is such a common, generic phrase that a user wouldn’t know what they are getting into. There’s an ambiguity that may breed confusion and hesitation. Always assume that your users are in a rush and that they’d be keen on getting down to business in the shortest time possible. Giving them the run-around with ambiguous anchor text defeats the purpose of the link.

Of course, you can mitigate against such confusion by leading up to the ‘Click Here’ with a couple of sentences providing context and explaining what the user will find when they follow the link.

4. It Assumes the Type of Device

Study the traffic to your website and pay attention to what devices most visitors are using. If you are like most sites today, you’ll realize that half or more of your traffic is from smartphones and tablets. If that’s the case, most users aren’t using a mouse when navigating your site. Ergo, when your anchor text says ‘Click Here’, that instruction cannot be executed in its literal form on a mobile device where screen tapping is the name of the game.

And that’s not the only instance where ‘Click Here’ cannot apply. Some users may be navigating your page with their keyboard or via voice commands. ‘Click Here’ not only seems to ignore these alternative modes of navigation but also implies that they are not supported.

5. It’s a Little Pedantic

“Sit here”. “Stand there”. “Walk here”. On the face of it, these statements seem quite harmless. However, if you’ve ever had someone say them to you, they come across as condescending, patronizing, infantilizing, pedantic and just rude (depending on the tone used). Every human has a proud and perhaps rebellious streak within them that makes them resent being told what to do. So when you tell users to ‘Click Here’, some may actually think twice about following your direction just to prove that you have no right to order them around.

One of the key tenets for business success is establishing an emotional connection with your prospective customers. Recognizing the visitors to your page are rational, intelligent individuals by paying attention to small details like your anchor text phrasing can make a substantial positive difference to your click-through rates.

‘Click here’ as anchor text reached its peak in the 1990s when web designers were experimenting with stylish page design and getting rid of the underlines on hyperlinks. Making the links indistinguishable from the rest of the text was thought of as a means of creating flowing, coherent content. It didn’t take too long though for many to figure out this was a bad idea and actually affected click-through rates by rendering hyperlinks almost invisible.

As a general rule, your anchor text should be concise yet descriptive enough for readers to know what information they can expect. By avoiding ‘Click Here’ and similarly problematic phrases, you’ll be halfway there to creating an anchor text that entices users to follow the link.

5 Steps to build more Creative and Effective Social Media Campaigns (Guest Blog)

Are you experiencing a creative drought? Or are you reprimanding your social media campaign with creative ideas, but some of these ideas get stuck in approval? You can come here in some ways with a more creative campaign to achieve your business objectives today, even if you are in the campaign planning process.

Running a social media campaign can be much different than running a managed social media profile.

Unlike your ongoing social media marketing campaigns, campaigns are for specific purposes and are only for a specific duration. This plan you take to run a social media campaign can be different from your usual social media marketing strategy and digital marketing strategy.

Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing

Talking to customers

Depending on your business, it goes on a call or takes a survey form. However, you are using this feedback, know that how people give money to you can do it not only for your product but also to understand that your industry is large enough to think and experience.

If you are not in such a situation, you can speak directly with your customers, try and schedule your customer success with some time. These are people who are constantly conversing with your audience and can tell you what pain points they are trying to solve. Then you can create custom social media campaigns on those specific challenges.

Do not forget the best practices SEO

All social media platforms have their own search engines and many of them can be indexed by Google, Bing and other third-party search engines, making SEO an important component of any campaign or competition.

Before launching your campaign, compile a list of targeted keywords, as well as any relevant hashtags you want to socialize. Once your list has been created, conduct basic query searches to find out what types of content are being discovered or what kind of content is coming in. The principle insights can help you refine your keyword list, ensure relevance, and potentially get a glimpse of the competition.

Collaborate with content

Do your social and content teams work together or do you rarely run on parallel tracks that are intersecting? If the latter is true, then you are losing.

When your content team is reporting socially (or not) well, they can create good content for your social team. When fits within the framework of brand messaging, product offerings, and large marketing enterprises, your social team can be more strategic about how content is posted when ads are continually updated about what content needs advertising. This intersection can really be a magic.

Run a Competitive Analysis

Regular competitive analysis helps you build a benchmark for your own brand. For example:

  • What is the average daily engagement for the brand you are looking at as your competition?
  • How often is their hashtag (#) used on a weekly basis?
  • What is a successful campaign for your primary competitor in terms of investment, follower growth, and the depth of connections (e.g., straightforward comments against comments and conversations)?

Keep in mind that benchmarking brands against you are not required to be competitive in banks or in your industry as well as for the dollar: they are trying to encourage specific brand voice or visual association with your target audience.

Social Media Optimization
Social Media Optimization

Search for your social media audience

About 79% of adults use Facebook-but are your customers actively engaged with the brand there? It’s important for your audience to understand things like who buys your audience, which age group is most difficult to sell, and what is the highest level of revenue for your returning customers? For social media, getting to know your audience is equally serious.

First, your brand must view the demographics of your most valuable social channel. As we have mentioned before, you should take note of your social media marketing policies. That’s why you need to find the most relevant channels with your goals.

Engage with your audience and do not ignore

Social media channels are created in the form of networks. This means that their main objective is to have a place to talk, discuss topics, and share content. Your brand cannot forget these basic elements of “networking” and efforts are not made to ensure the chances of conversations or engagement.

Through social media, you get respect in the form of a brand by being present and talking to your audience. This is the reason why social customer care is very important for brands wishing to raise awareness of the audience. It’s all about engagement.

Learn from innovative CMOs and marketers

It is necessary to think and think about doing research on marketing executives (including myself!). Read interviews with CMOs from best-class brands, and focus on wide-ranging initiatives in your company. The strategies and messages set at a higher level always have a marching effect on departmental orders-if not now, then the next quarter. Understand bold, innovative approaches, and you will be able to come up with and perform creative campaigns that meet your business goals in your organization.

Spend time listening

Hearing your friends comes naturally. You want to hear what they have to say, and it is easy: they are sitting on the table with you on brunch, or you are writing back and forth in the storm. Since you are involved in this uninterrupted exchange of information, and listening carefully, you know about as many friends as you know about yourself. There is no truth about your relationship with your social audiences.

With our social audiences, we push information (proprietary material) and measure the effect of that content. Sometimes we forget to begin by listening to our audience and actually creating content about their care. We push content that is not perfect. It seems that this is telling your friend about a golden retriever puppy, whom he wants to adopt and wants to ask for your advice, and you are answering by listing your favorite properties of Labradoodles – Is not right. We, marketers, become terrible in this trap. Here’s how you can change your thinking.

Make your sympathy

Sympathy is created when you pay attention and listen deeply. It comes naturally in friendship: If your friend is hurting, you are hurting. When you share the painful news of your friend’s divorce, you will not scroll through your Instagram feed, right? The same concept can be applied to your relationship with your customers and/or social audiences. Do not engage yourself so much with your proprietary content (what your brand is saying) that you miss your audience’s view and feel at social, forums and blogs.

Bonford

What is Bonford and why are people talking about it? (Guest Post)

In the business world, once in a while, something big happens that makes heads turn. In certain industries such occasions are rare. One such tectonic shift has been initiated by a fairly new company called Bonford. Never have I ever seen such class and sophistication in men’s fashion industry and that too at such affordable rates. I think they’ve really made an achievement here.

What is Bonford?

To put it in simple words, they are luxury leather Shoe Company. Even after being fairly new they’ve been competing head-to-head with the companies already dominating the market. They’ve gained my admiration and the markets’ respect in the short time they’ve been running.

Bonford Gentleman Leather Shoes
Bonford Gentleman Leather Shoes

Now I’ll answer the question going through your mind, what’s so good about them? What’s the entire hullabaloo about? And the most important of all should you invest in them?

Take a deep breath and bear with me. I’ll answer every question as we move along.

Who are they? As I said, they’re a new company manufacturing and selling men’s leather shoes. With the motto “go big or go home” they’ve hit big in the Indian shoe market.

What makes them so great? If I’m writing about it them, then there are a lot of things that put them on a pedestal.

Real leather a.k.a top grain leather

There are different kinds of leather available in the market and chances are you’ve been getting the short end of the deal with cheap or faux leather in the name of “genuine” leather. Genuine actually means the leftover part of leather, the one that nobody wants. They combine those leftovers and call it genuine leather. Don’t get me wrong, the source is good; the quality, on the other hand, is not.

Bonford Luxury Leather Shoes
Bonford Luxury Leather Shoes

Bonford constructs their shoes with a single piece of top grain leather. According to the leather chemist.org, top grain is, “The first cut taken from the grain side of a split hide from which nothing except the hair and associated epidermis has been removed”. Basically, it’s the most expensive kind.

Blake construction

A result of an industrial revolution, Blake stitching is when the upper part of the shoe is wrapped around the insole and stitched to the outsole with a single stitch. I made it complicated, didn’t I?

Bonford Luxury Shoes

Simply put, Blake stitch is a single stitch that gives a clean look to the shoe. After a long wear, you can resole it easily. Oh and this makes the shoes extremely flexible.

Handcrafted and painted

The top grain leather is stitched to the cast by exceptionally experienced hands giving them a visible clean look. The coloring is also done by hand.

According to their website, the painting process is quite long with several steps of coloring treatment giving the shoes a smooth marble effect. The edges are also coated with hot wax to waterproof and seal the leather.

Price

The price, I feel has been carefully set keeping the Indian market in mind. We Indians, we wish for the best quality to be as affordable as possible.

Bonford has just done that. As compared to other competing brands, Bonford has managed to sell all that and more at a very reasonable price. I mean where else can you find such craftsmanship and quality at such a good price point.

To answer the final question

Should you buy a Bonford shoe? Isn’t it obvious already? A good leather shoe isn’t an investment you should hesitate to make.

All in all, I believe they’re giving a tough competition to global brands like Tresmode and Louis Philippe. They understand their customer’s needs and have exceptionally tried to help the common man in upgrading his shoe style.

Software Developer`

How to earn your first gig as a software engineer (Guest Post)

There are multiple ways you can implement to get your first gig as a software engineer.

But before you start applying for gigs you must comprehend the art of software engineering and web development to do so.

Develop a few samples in advance of your work, either a sample of an app or a software which you recently developed or a website which you recently hand-coded for a relative.

As easy as it sounds, getting your first gig can be pretty hard to get while starting off. Because you barely have any networking and you are new to the industry. But if you follow this guide of ours step by step, then you can easily get a hand of your first gig as a software engineer in no time.

Your friends or family members

This is where you can potentially get your first gig, your close friends or family members. As you know them personally, therefore they are much likely to give you your first gig to develop something for them.

It can either be a website or an e-commerce store for a friend. Or a random video game for your relative (Elon Musk created this game named “Blaster” when he was twelve and sold it for $500).

Friends Group
Friends Group

As starting off new you will have to network with others apart from your friends and family members as well, such as friends of friends and their relatives etc. If you have watched the movie “The Social Network” you will see that Mark Zuckerberg got his idea of creating Facebook from a guy at Harvard who offered him a gig to create the site. And that is how you will have to network with other people. You have to tell others that you can code and gain some attention to it.

Through your local store

If there is a well to do store in your local area which gets a reputable amount of sales every month and doesn’t have a website. Then you can simply ask them if you can create a website for them through which they can expand a business online. If you are one of their regular customers, then it’s even better!

You can also go to local schools. And offer them services like making them a software where you can connect students with teachers (This is something which my college did they created this app named “Classtune” where teachers and students can connect with one another).

Or either way, build something innovative for them with a service. If your idea is good, then you can expand this idea to other schools as well.

Find your first gig through freelancing sites

This is the number one way where new software and web developers get their first gigs.

Freelancing sites like Freelancer.com and Upwork.com offer various incentives to developers to get their first gig.

You can not only offer software development opportunities but various services such as photoshopping an image or helping someone with a problem in Windows 10.

Freelancer Software Engineer
Freelancer Software Engineer

But traditionally if you get gigs for software development or App development, then it will be an either making an entire website or an app. You can get up to a month to develop it and the paycheques for them are pretty good as well (you can earn between one to five grand).

Outreach Websites

You can outreach to websites which have an old or outdated design and give them a newer look for a reasonable price. If you outreach a hundred websites then you can get up to five gigs making you over a hundred bucks.

You can also outreach to businesses which lack various features on their website and fix it for them for a reasonable fee. If your work is worth it, then you will be referred to other sites as well in the community.

Advertising

You can invest in Google or Facebook ads to get your first gig. Simply create a good looking Facebook page and give a few samples of the works you have done. Such as a website or software which you recently hand coded.

Social Media Advertisement
Social Media Advertisement
  • And the best part of advertising?

You’ll get targeted people who are actually interested in the services that you offer. And thus they are the ones who are most likely to offer you a gig.

Start an Udemy course

You can start an Udemy course teaching others on how to code and people will potentially buy your courses for a reasonable sum of money. You can start a YouTube channel as well where you can teach others how to develop software or simply how to code and monetize that channel with ads.

Once your Channel gets a reasonable amount of views, you will eventually get offers from various people emailing you to work for them.

How to grow as a software developer?

You will have to keep a portfolio of how much money you want to make every year as a software developer and set a goal.

Also, start a website over your business and also regularly blog on it. Also, grow its branding via social media.

Try to get listed as a Pro freelancer in freelancing sites such as Fiverr and Upwork.

Also, you can partner up with one of your close friends into your freelancing business.

And also you can hire other people as well in case you get a surplus of gigs.

Conclusion

Getting your first gig will be extremely easy if you follow the strategies which we have mentioned in this guide of ours.

If this article benefited you, please give it a small Facebook share.

Content Marketing Tips by ShouTech

27 actionable content marketing tips for modern day Digital Marketing (Infographic)

Did you know Content Marketing roughly generates 3 times as many leads as Traditional Marketing and costs 62% less?

Whether you are a Content Marketing pro or a newbie who has just entered the industry, it is never a bad idea to go back to the basics and review them.

Understanding the consumer psyche is the ultimate way to seek success in Content Marketing industry. Instead of writing what you want to share, write what the reader is willing to read. Thus, it is advocated to create a buyer persona before you start producing content. This is an ideal way that will lead to much higher conversions. As a Content Marketer, if you realize this fact, half the battle is won.

Identify ways to build and maintain a deeper connection with the reader. This can be done via storytelling approach which is not only engaging but helps the reader relate to the content shared.

Additionally, take care of producing lengthy pieces of content as it is truly effective in positioning as an authoritative topic. Also, it is effective in improving the search engine ranking. According to Backlinko, ‘content with more words can cover a wider breadth and are likely preferred to shorter superficial articles’. Ideally, the content length has a correlation with the SERP position. However, it can be accomplished only with strong SEO practices.

In the hoard of creating a long form of content do not compromise with the quality. Remember, nothing replaces quality and authenticity when building an audience. There is so much content available online. In the pool of so much content, trace ways to stand out from your competitors by producing unique quality-based content.

Further, tap on influencers to multiply your content reach. Make reference to influencers by linking to their content or quoting them within your Content Marketing activities. Riding on their brand identity will not only produce the better result in real-time but also save a lot of time.

Besides this, repurposing old content in a new way is one Content Marketing tip that will never fade away. This will bring freshness to the existing content thus providing certain unique value to the readers.

Moving on, ‘Great visual content must enhance the story being told.’ Content coupled with relevant images, GIFs, videos, infographics act as the perfect blend as these visual elements substantiate the text well. These days readers are not keen on reading it all, if the same information is displayed in the form of graphics, the impact becomes double.

More so, blogging on a regular basis is another important yet not much-paid heed upon Content Marketing tactic. This way, a level of consistency is maintained and the readers get hooked on your content as they’ll look forward to your content. In addition to this, ensure that you promote the content thoroughly on different social media channels. ‘94% of B2B Marketers Use LinkedIn to Distribute Content and is the Most Used Social Media Site’, as reported in LinkedIn Selling.

Moreover, to help develop your reputation and visibility online, syndicate your content to reach a new audience and drive referral traffic back to your site.

Another worth considering Content Marketing tactic is to create a series of content to drive repeated traffic. In a nutshell, do not generate one-off pieces of content. This will keep your readers hooked to your content.

Do not miss out on having a clear and dedicated Call-to-Action (CTA) to trigger the reader to leave his/her credentials either by leaving a comment in the section or filling-up the form. It could either be in a textual format or a graphic too! Also, track and measure the performance of the Call-to-Action used. This will help you analyze what is working best for your audience.

Practice the art of guest blogging on popular industry blogs and link back to your website to generate traffic from organic and paid sources. By getting involved in guest post submissions, you get the chance to explore new audience that will help boost your SEO.

Make email marketing an inevitable element of your Content Marketing strategy! 8-% of businesses report that email id directly related to their primary revenue. So, now you know what not to miss at all!

Leveraging the aforementioned content marketing tips is an assured way to turn around your marketing strategy and fetch the desired number of sales conversions.
