5 Reasons Why ‘Click Here’ As Anchor Text isn’t recommended (But There Are Exceptions)

Anchor text plays a defining role in how clickable a hyperlink in your content is. Even though the page you are linking to maybe a credible, authoritative and informative resource, all that won’t matter for the reader if the anchor text is lackluster or repulsive.

Many website owners and copywriters fail at this crucial step of content creation by treating anchor text as an afterthought. There’s no better example of this failure than the frequent use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text. While the phrase sounds harmless and to some extent practical, it’s usually not recommended for anchor text though there are exceptions.

We take a look at why you should use ‘Click Here’ sparingly.

1. Google Doesn’t Like It

One of the reasons for the popularity, proliferation, and power of the Internet is the absence of a central authority. Still, while there’s nobody or person sitting somewhere dictating what can and cannot be done on the worldwide web, Google is by far the single most influential organization on the Internet.

Accounting for the largest proportion of web traffic, Google’s opinions on how the world wide web should work is pivotal. You are under no obligation to adhere to Google’s recommendations or rules but failure to do so would mean missing out on the enormous web traffic that originates from Google Search.

When it comes to the use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text, Google is unequivocal in discouraging it (see Google’s SEO Starter Guide).

2. Confuses Search Engines

Google discourages the use of ‘Click Here’ as anchor text. That’s partly because the phrase doesn’t help search engine bots understand and categorize the content. When assessing content for relevance and authority, search engines compare the text on the target page with the phrases different websites use as anchor text to link to the page. If you use ‘Click Here’ for most or all links on your web page or website, you’re denying search engines the vital information they need to establish the context of the target page.

It’s bad enough if you are using ‘Click Here’ for external links but much worse when linking to internal pages. In theory, you are the foremost authority on the content of your page. So if you are not clear about what your internal pages are about, you cannot expect anyone else to do it for you. Your web page’s reputation could suffer for it in the eyes of search engines.

3. It May Be Ambiguous

‘Click Here’ is such a common, generic phrase that a user wouldn’t know what they are getting into. There’s an ambiguity that may breed confusion and hesitation. Always assume that your users are in a rush and that they’d be keen on getting down to business in the shortest time possible. Giving them the run-around with ambiguous anchor text defeats the purpose of the link.

Of course, you can mitigate against such confusion by leading up to the ‘Click Here’ with a couple of sentences providing context and explaining what the user will find when they follow the link.

4. It Assumes the Type of Device

Study the traffic to your website and pay attention to what devices most visitors are using. If you are like most sites today, you’ll realize that half or more of your traffic is from smartphones and tablets. If that’s the case, most users aren’t using a mouse when navigating your site. Ergo, when your anchor text says ‘Click Here’, that instruction cannot be executed in its literal form on a mobile device where screen tapping is the name of the game.

And that’s not the only instance where ‘Click Here’ cannot apply. Some users may be navigating your page with their keyboard or via voice commands. ‘Click Here’ not only seems to ignore these alternative modes of navigation but also implies that they are not supported.

5. It’s a Little Pedantic

“Sit here”. “Stand there”. “Walk here”. On the face of it, these statements seem quite harmless. However, if you’ve ever had someone say them to you, they come across as condescending, patronizing, infantilizing, pedantic and just rude (depending on the tone used). Every human has a proud and perhaps rebellious streak within them that makes them resent being told what to do. So when you tell users to ‘Click Here’, some may actually think twice about following your direction just to prove that you have no right to order them around.

One of the key tenets for business success is establishing an emotional connection with your prospective customers. Recognizing the visitors to your page are rational, intelligent individuals by paying attention to small details like your anchor text phrasing can make a substantial positive difference to your click-through rates.

‘Click here’ as anchor text reached its peak in the 1990s when web designers were experimenting with stylish page design and getting rid of the underlines on hyperlinks. Making the links indistinguishable from the rest of the text was thought of as a means of creating flowing, coherent content. It didn’t take too long though for many to figure out this was a bad idea and actually affected click-through rates by rendering hyperlinks almost invisible.

As a general rule, your anchor text should be concise yet descriptive enough for readers to know what information they can expect. By avoiding ‘Click Here’ and similarly problematic phrases, you’ll be halfway there to creating an anchor text that entices users to follow the link.

Online Reputation Management

6 Things Every Business Should Know About Online Reputation Management in Melbourne

Are you searching for online reputation management in Melbourne? A wrong Facebook picture or a series of bad reviews can ruin the name and fame build over time. Both individuals and businesses worry about falling down in the pit of a bad reputation in the digital world. The status or image of a brand has become a critical factor in the last decade. Businesses are judged for their actions and brand representation. So, a well-planned representation can promote brand image while a series of mistakes can ruin it.

Thanks to the experts of online reputation management in Melbourne, businesses are able to utilize regular management of their brand image in the online world. But many still feel confused about the necessity of such a service. This post covers some of the most valuable questions regarding the status of a brand in the digital world.

  1. What can a reputation manager do for a business?

The job of such a specialist is to ensure the desired image of a business or individual in the digital world. The past, present, and future of a brand are protected from any element that can harm the image.

Benefits of Online Reputation Management

The basic responsibilities include:

  • Creating effective, targeted and well-designed content.
  • Attaining authoritative links and removing negative links.
  • Obtaining high-quality reviews and working on the elimination of negative reviews.
  • Working on any crisis that can harm the brand image.
  • Utilizing SEO to enhance digital credibility.
  • Cleaning every aspect of web presence for consistency and quality.
  1. Why does every business need digital image management?

Running a business is not an easy task. The owner of a business has to wear multiple hats on a daily basis. At the same time, the employees of a business are supposed to focus on daily tasks. They can’t divert their focus from the actions required to keep the business running.

Why Business Needs ORM Services
Why Business Needs ORM Services

On the other hand, image building requires consistent efforts and professional excellence in managing the dynamic nature of the digital world. Hence, the presence of professionals is necessary for every business to monitor and manage the status of their brand consistently.

  1. What are the common problems most brands encounter?

Commonly, the problems arise due to the unawareness of growing issues. Most brands require assistance to manage their content quality, SEO, reviews, and content marketing. Bad optimization of the web presence and low-quality content are highly common these days.

The solutions require a comprehensive assessment of the problems with an audit. ORM specialists can conduct such an audit and plan a step-by-step process to eliminate every problem.

  1. How long does it take to fix an ORM problem?

The duration required to resolve an ORM problem depends on various factors. The intensity of an issue, the objectives, the size of a brand and many other aspects come into play to decide the time duration. This is the reason why smart businesses keep an ongoing ORM partner to protect themselves from such problems in the first place.

Every ORM problem is unique and requires a unique approach to its solution, which is why professional consultation becomes essential for a business.

  1. Should a business be proactive or reactive?

In most cases, a business has to follow both proactive and reactive approaches, depending on the situation. However, the presence of an ORM partner shifts the graph a little bit towards the proactive side. The specialists regularly monitor the web presence of a brand with website analysis, social media evaluation, search engine assessment, and other valuable steps.

Being proactive diminishes the chances of a brand image crisis. However, there is always a chance to find an unwanted situation. Then, the ORM team takes reactive measures to recover a brand from that situation.

  1. What is the process of changing a negative conversation into something positive?

For a company, the conversation happening around their brand decides the reputation. So, a negative conversation in the industry puts a bad impact on the status of a brand.

Changing a negative conversation into a positive one requires well-directed steps. It starts with the identification of the cause of a negative conversation. Why people are talking negatively about a brand? This leads to a problem, which requires a solution. Then, the brand has to work on the solution and provide a positive side of the same problem to their target market.

Spreading a positive voice requires influencers’ support and their involvement in brand marketing. The key is to listen to the target market. Only then, a brand can know what to focus on and how to create a new, positive conversation.

Final words

While consistent ORM is necessary, it is also possible to come back from a bad brand image. It all comes down the ability to work hard in the right direction.

Call a reliable company providing services on online reputation management in Melbourne now! Brand identity requires consistent, proactive and reactive support.

5 Steps to build more Creative and Effective Social Media Campaigns (Guest Blog)

Are you experiencing a creative drought? Or are you reprimanding your social media campaign with creative ideas, but some of these ideas get stuck in approval? You can come here in some ways with a more creative campaign to achieve your business objectives today, even if you are in the campaign planning process.

Running a social media campaign can be much different than running a managed social media profile.

Unlike your ongoing social media marketing campaigns, campaigns are for specific purposes and are only for a specific duration. This plan you take to run a social media campaign can be different from your usual social media marketing strategy and digital marketing strategy.

Social Media Marketing
Social Media Marketing

Talking to customers

Depending on your business, it goes on a call or takes a survey form. However, you are using this feedback, know that how people give money to you can do it not only for your product but also to understand that your industry is large enough to think and experience.

If you are not in such a situation, you can speak directly with your customers, try and schedule your customer success with some time. These are people who are constantly conversing with your audience and can tell you what pain points they are trying to solve. Then you can create custom social media campaigns on those specific challenges.

Do not forget the best practices SEO

All social media platforms have their own search engines and many of them can be indexed by Google, Bing and other third-party search engines, making SEO an important component of any campaign or competition.

Before launching your campaign, compile a list of targeted keywords, as well as any relevant hashtags you want to socialize. Once your list has been created, conduct basic query searches to find out what types of content are being discovered or what kind of content is coming in. The principle insights can help you refine your keyword list, ensure relevance, and potentially get a glimpse of the competition.

Collaborate with content

Do your social and content teams work together or do you rarely run on parallel tracks that are intersecting? If the latter is true, then you are losing.

When your content team is reporting socially (or not) well, they can create good content for your social team. When fits within the framework of brand messaging, product offerings, and large marketing enterprises, your social team can be more strategic about how content is posted when ads are continually updated about what content needs advertising. This intersection can really be a magic.

Run a Competitive Analysis

Regular competitive analysis helps you build a benchmark for your own brand. For example:

  • What is the average daily engagement for the brand you are looking at as your competition?
  • How often is their hashtag (#) used on a weekly basis?
  • What is a successful campaign for your primary competitor in terms of investment, follower growth, and the depth of connections (e.g., straightforward comments against comments and conversations)?

Keep in mind that benchmarking brands against you are not required to be competitive in banks or in your industry as well as for the dollar: they are trying to encourage specific brand voice or visual association with your target audience.

Social Media Optimization
Social Media Optimization

Search for your social media audience

About 79% of adults use Facebook-but are your customers actively engaged with the brand there? It’s important for your audience to understand things like who buys your audience, which age group is most difficult to sell, and what is the highest level of revenue for your returning customers? For social media, getting to know your audience is equally serious.

First, your brand must view the demographics of your most valuable social channel. As we have mentioned before, you should take note of your social media marketing policies. That’s why you need to find the most relevant channels with your goals.

Engage with your audience and do not ignore

Social media channels are created in the form of networks. This means that their main objective is to have a place to talk, discuss topics, and share content. Your brand cannot forget these basic elements of “networking” and efforts are not made to ensure the chances of conversations or engagement.

Through social media, you get respect in the form of a brand by being present and talking to your audience. This is the reason why social customer care is very important for brands wishing to raise awareness of the audience. It’s all about engagement.

Learn from innovative CMOs and marketers

It is necessary to think and think about doing research on marketing executives (including myself!). Read interviews with CMOs from best-class brands, and focus on wide-ranging initiatives in your company. The strategies and messages set at a higher level always have a marching effect on departmental orders-if not now, then the next quarter. Understand bold, innovative approaches, and you will be able to come up with and perform creative campaigns that meet your business goals in your organization.

Spend time listening

Hearing your friends comes naturally. You want to hear what they have to say, and it is easy: they are sitting on the table with you on brunch, or you are writing back and forth in the storm. Since you are involved in this uninterrupted exchange of information, and listening carefully, you know about as many friends as you know about yourself. There is no truth about your relationship with your social audiences.

With our social audiences, we push information (proprietary material) and measure the effect of that content. Sometimes we forget to begin by listening to our audience and actually creating content about their care. We push content that is not perfect. It seems that this is telling your friend about a golden retriever puppy, whom he wants to adopt and wants to ask for your advice, and you are answering by listing your favorite properties of Labradoodles – Is not right. We, marketers, become terrible in this trap. Here’s how you can change your thinking.

Make your sympathy

Sympathy is created when you pay attention and listen deeply. It comes naturally in friendship: If your friend is hurting, you are hurting. When you share the painful news of your friend’s divorce, you will not scroll through your Instagram feed, right? The same concept can be applied to your relationship with your customers and/or social audiences. Do not engage yourself so much with your proprietary content (what your brand is saying) that you miss your audience’s view and feel at social, forums and blogs.
